A Family Automotive Legacy in Silver Spring
The story of Sport Automotive began in 1950, when Robert Fulton Hicks opened an automotive dealership at 5929 Georgia Avenue in Northwest D.C. Known as “Bob,” Robert had begun his career in the automotive industry before passing the business to his son-in-law, George Fogarty, in 1952.
George had a vision for how automotive businesses could better serve growing suburban communities. During a trip to California, he saw the emerging concept of suburban automotive parks and recognized an opportunity to bring that idea to the Washington, D.C., area. That vision eventually led the business to Silver Spring in 1968, where George helped establish what became the Montgomery Auto Sales Park.
The move created the foundation for a family business that would continue to grow in Silver Spring for decades. More than 75 years after Robert opened the original dealership, the Fogarty family remains involved in the business and connected to the community where its story took root.
Growing With Generations of Drivers
George Fogarty's son, Robert Hicks Fogarty Sr., followed the family tradition into the automotive industry. After college, Robert Sr. began working at one of the family's dealerships in Orlando before returning to the Washington, D.C., area to work alongside his father.
He became President of the organization in 1984 and later assumed full ownership in 1989 following his father's passing. Over the years, Robert Sr. continued building the family business while adapting to changes in the automotive industry and the needs of local drivers.
The next generation eventually joined him. Robert Jr. began working at the dealership in 2007, followed by his younger brother Gibbs in 2009. Robert Jr. took on a General Manager role in 2011, while Gibbs became General Manager of another dealership operation in 2016.
By the time Robert Sr. retired in 2020 and passed ownership to his sons, Sport Automotive had become a true multi-generational family business. Today, Robert Jr. and Gibbs continue that tradition, bringing decades of combined automotive experience to the business.
Honda Joins the Sport Family
Honda became part of the Sport Automotive family in 1995, adding a brand known for thoughtful engineering, everyday practicality and a broad lineup of cars and SUVs.
